Years ago when I was in grad school the stress also had me dealing with my health in new ways. I was getting sick more often and experiencing more digestive issues like heartburn, cramps, and bloating.
A friend turned me onto Ayurveda and I adjusted my diet. More importantly, I did a wonderful kitchari cleanse and also learned to make this amazingly comforting ginger tonic. Although I already knew to make a strong tea using fresh ginger root, this took it to the next level.
Perfect for the digestive system, it calms aches, reduces cramps, and eases bloat. It's especially effective for colds--soothing sore throats—helping to warm you up.
Ingredients:
1 large ginger root
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom
1 tsp nutmeg
1 tbsp fennel seeds
1/4 tsp black pepper (optional)
2 tbsp turmeric
6 cups water Raw honey
Wash ginger root and slice thinly. Fill medium pot with about 6 cups of water, then add ginger and spices. Bring to a boil then let simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
If not serving immediately, Let cool and transfer into a jar or similar glass container. To serve, pour through a strainer and sweeten with raw honey to taste. It's best not to boil honey as to retain its probiotic qualities.
